Protecting Your Soft Furnishings Through Our Queensland Tropical Summer
If you've spent a few summers in Queensland, you'll know how quickly the weather can change. One minute it's bright and sunny, and the next a summer storm is rolling through with heavy rain, humidity and enough moisture to make the whole house feel damp.
While we often focus on preparing our gardens and outdoor spaces for the season, it's easy to forget that our curtains, blinds, cushions and upholstered furniture are also feeling the effects of the heat and humidity. A little extra care now can help keep them looking fresh and beautiful all summer long.
One of the biggest challenges is humidity. When warm, moist air becomes trapped indoors, it creates the perfect environment for mould, mildew and musty odours. Whenever the weather allows, open windows and doors to encourage airflow through your home. Ceiling fans, air conditioning and dehumidifiers can also help reduce moisture levels. It's also worth making sure damp towels, cushions or fabrics aren't left bundled together, as trapped moisture can quickly become a problem.
Curtains and sheers benefit from regular attention during summer. A quick vacuum using an upholstery attachment can remove dust before it settles deep into the fabric. After heavy rain, take a moment to check curtains near windows for any signs of dampness caused by leaks or wind driven rain. If they become wet, allow them to dry completely before closing them again. Delicate or specialty fabrics are often best left to professional cleaners who understand how to care for them safely.
Blinds need seasonal care too. Roller Blinds can usually be gently dusted and wiped according to the manufacturer's instructions. Roman Blinds require a little more attention because their folds can trap moisture and dust. Always ensure they are completely dry before raising them, as folded damp fabric can encourage mould growth and unpleasant smells. Checking window frames and sills for condensation or small leaks can also help prevent bigger issues later.
Plantation Shutters are a popular choice in Queensland homes and are generally easy to maintain. Regular dusting with a soft cloth or brush is usually all that's required. For marks or fingerprints, a lightly damp cloth may be suitable, depending on the material. Just remember that excessive moisture can damage timber components, so it's important to dry surfaces promptly.
Your lounge suits, chairs and cushions also appreciate a little summer care. Vacuuming regularly, particularly beneath removable cushions, helps remove dust and moisture that can accumulate unnoticed. Rotating cushions promotes even wear and allows trapped humidity to escape. If outdoor cushions get caught in a summer storm, bring them under cover and allow them to dry thoroughly before storing them. Stacking damp cushions together is one of the quickest ways to encourage mould.
Many homeowners ask about products and home remedies. Fabric protectors can be useful on suitable materials, but it's always important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and test products in an inconspicuous area first. Home remedies, including clove oil, may not be suitable and can sometimes cause staining or damage. They're also not a replacement for dealing with the source of a moisture problem.
I have a couple of go to products myself (Glen 20 and Damp Rid Moisture Absorbers) which I rely on all year round. If you have air conditioning, you can also use the dry mode setting.
Most importantly, know when to call a professional. If furnishings develop persistent musty odours, show signs of mould or become waterlogged after a storm, expert advice can often prevent further damage.
With good ventilation, regular maintenance and a little extra attention during the wetter months, your soft furnishings can stay fresh, comfortable and looking their best throughout another Queensland summer. After all, prevention is always easier than restoration.
